Hiring an Offshore Development Team in India: A 2026 Guide for US, UK & Canadian Businesses

If you're a business owner in the US, UK, Canada or Australia looking at Indian development agencies, you've probably already run the numbers — the cost difference is real. What's less obvious is how to tell a team that will actually deliver from one that will disappear after the deposit. Here's what to actually check.

Time zones are less of a problem than people assume

India is 9.5-13.5 hours ahead of US time zones, and 4.5-5.5 hours ahead of the UK. That sounds like a wall, but in practice it means your evening is our working morning — write requirements or feedback before you log off, and there's usually a response or a finished piece of work waiting when you're back online. For UK and continental European clients the overlap is even more direct, often several working hours in common.

What to ask before you sign anything

Do I get a written scope document, or just a verbal estimate? A real proposal names what's included, what isn't, and what happens if requirements change mid-project.

Who actually owns the code when it's done? Ask this directly — some agencies quietly retain hosting or repository access as leverage. Ours doesn't: full source code, database and credential handover is standard once a project is paid, detailed in a public code ownership policy rather than buried in a contract clause.

Where does my data actually live? If the agency stores customer data, ask which country, under which law. Data-residency requirements differ by jurisdiction (GDPR in the UK/EU, various US state laws, India's DPDP Act 2023) and a serious vendor should be able to answer this without hesitation.

How do I actually reach someone? A dedicated point of contact who responds inside your working hours matters more than a large team roster.

The honest tradeoffs

Cost is real and significant — Indian development rates are typically a fraction of US/UK/Canadian agency rates for comparable engineering quality, which is why offshore development has been standard practice for two decades, not a new trend. What you give up, if you pick badly, is communication clarity and accountability — not skill. The fix isn't avoiding offshore teams; it's picking one that puts scope, ownership and communication in writing before work starts, the same way you'd vet any vendor regardless of where they're based.
